Gayle LaDean Travis, “Dean” would like to let you know that her work on earth is done. Her new mission takes her to a wonderful place. After a long stay in the Grace Living Center in Mangum she died in her sleep on March 16, 2017.
Gayle LaDean was born on June 7, 1925 in Greer County to Harry and Tressie Beall. LaDean lived most of her life in the Mangum area graduating from City View High School in 1943 at the top of her class. After completing high school she attended Southwestern State College and received her teaching certificate so she could teach during the war. Many of her former students were impressed by her perfect cursive writing and spelling ability. While teaching school she soon met a handsome young man, James Henry Travis from Heidelberg, Mississippi. The marriage ceremony took place at the Altus Air Force Base on February 2, 1944. During the war they were stationed at Tucson, Arizona, where their first son Jim Travis was born. They soon moved to Greer County and purchased a farm. Their second son, Bob Travis was born in Mangum before they left to go to Carswell Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas. They eventually moved back to Mangum area and lived in the East View Community. She was a devoted homemaker and stay at home mom while her sons were young. She supplemented the family income by designing and making beautiful dresses for many ladies, as well as helping her husband on the family farm. After her sons were grown she worked outside of the home. One of her favorite jobs was working for Mangum Public Schools as an aide and secretary at the Edison Elementary. She loved and treated the children as her own and enjoyed working with the teachers and staff. She was an “perfect fit” because of her sweet disposition. LaDean enjoyed all types of sport especially the Mangum Tigers, OU Sooners, and the Dallas Cowboys. She and her husband provided rides for any young person that wanted to attend a sporting event. Through the years they shared their home with various family members. Everyone was always welcome in their home. Her grandchildren were always treated in a special and loving way. Going to Grandma Deans’ was always filled with fun activities. They loved to entertain their grandchildren and their friends. Dean enjoyed playing board games, puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and dominoes. Being a part of her Church family at the Mangum Church of Christ was extremely important to her. She loved worshiping her Lord, and was an active member. She belonged to the American Legion Auxiliary and the Greer County Homemakers. In her later years she enjoyed seeing her grandchildren and reminiscing about school, family, and friends.
In her ninety-one years, 282 days, she touched many lives with her kindness and genuine concern and love for others. She will not be forgotten by her loved ones and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband James Henry Travis, sisters Ruby and Ruth, brothers Harry “Bud” and Junior Beall.
